Tuesday Reviewsday: Broods and Tove Lo — Oct 08, 2014

Tuesday Reviewsday: Broods and Tove Lo — Oct 08, 2014 Tove Lo Credit Josefin Mirsch In this edition of Tuesday Reviewsday our weekly new music segment Shirley Halperin music editor at Billboard Magazine spoke to Alex Cohen ibout some fantastic new female acts starting with a New Zealand act called Broods Shirley Halperin Artist Broods Album Evergreen Songs Mother Father Bridges Bridges Summary Lets start off with the brother-sister duo called Broods They come from New Zealand and you can hear in their sound a cue to a fellow Kiwi by the stage name of Lorde Thats no coincidence Broods who are where siblings Caleb and Georgia Nott 22 and 20 share a producer with Lorde Joel Little who helmed her breakthrough album Pure Heroine and of course the song Royals With Broods you can see a similar path to cross the Pacific and make a mark here in the U S Now those who were at Sam Smiths shows at the Greek Theater last week and got there early enough to catch the opener may have seen Broods understated monochromatic set I was there and definitely noticed the ebb and flow between these two twentysomethings how Caleb stays to the left side surrounded by keyboards computers and effects almost like its a protective force while Georgia slinks and twitches nearby free as a butterfly They sounded and looked great and its no wonder a major label like Capitol Records would scoop them up and put them on the road with one of their more high profile artists Mother Father Artist Tove Lo Album Queen of the Clouds Songs Habits Stay High Timebomb Summary Tove Los another international young talent but shes from Sweden Los been building buzz gradually over the last year or so largely due to the song Habits which you may recognize Habits Stay High Tove Lo joins a slew of female artists currently ascending the charts including Ariana Grande and Jessie J who we talked about a few weeks ago Meghan Trainor whos 1 this week with All About That Bass Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora each of which have something unique to offer Ariana has that chirpy falsetto Rita can belt Iggy can rap What Tove Lo offers to the world is borderline NSFW lyrics and highly suggestive ual themes In other words this is not an album you want to sing along to with young children in the backseat Ill give you an example from the clean version of the album the song ahem - Like Em Young where Tove sings Hey girl why you judging me when your guys turning 53 And the opening introduction to the album is simply called The Sex But musically Tove Lo twists and turns in so many unexpected ways that it makes her even harder to define Take a listen for instance to the song Timebomb and the way she flows Timebomb

Mixhouse Vs. Kim Wilde. The Wilde Megamix by Jonas Mix Larsen.

Mixhouse Vs. Kim Wilde. The Wilde Megamix by Jonas Mix Larsen. Kim Wilde born Kim Smith 18 November 1960 is an English pop singer author and television presenter who burst onto the music scene in 1981 with the number 2 UK Singles Chart new wave classic Kids in America In 1987 she had a major hit in the United States when her version of The Supremes classic You Keep Me Hangin On topped the charts Starting in 1998 while still active in music she has branched into an alternative career as a landscape gardener Wilde released her debut single Kids in America in January 1981 An instant success it reached number two in the UK Singles Chart and scaled the Top 5 in other countries such as Germany France and Australia Although it achieved only moderate success in the US peaking at number 25 when released in 1982 it is often regarded today as Wildes signature song Her debut album Kim Wilde repeated the success of the single spawning two further hits in Chequered Love Top 5 in the UK France Australia and Germany and the UK-only single Water on Glass Her follow-up album was 1982s Select led by the hit singles Cambodia and View From a Bridge Both were Number 1 hits in France and reached Top 10 positions in Germany and Australia At the time there was some controversy about Wildes hesitation to do live concerts Her first concerts in September 1982 took place in Denmark before embarking on a UK-wide tour in October Wildes third album Catch as Catch Can 1983 was a relative failure The first single from the album Love Blonde was another success in France and Scandinavia but failed to have major success in other countries The failure of the album led to her leaving RAK and signing with MCA Records in the summer of 1984 Wildes first MCA album Teases Dares was again overlooked in her home country citation needed but fared better in Germany France and Scandinavia as well as scoring another German Top 10 single with The Second Time which was Top 30 in the UK The video for this song appeared in an episode of the 1980s TV hit Knight Rider in 1985 The second single The Touch was not a commercial success but the third single the rockabilly Rage to Love made the UK top 20 in 1985 All of Wildes songs up to this point including all her major hits had been written by her father Marty and brother Ricky On Teases Dares she penning two songs Meanwhile Wilde had embarked on three European concert tours 1983 85 and 86 On her fifth album 1986s Another Step Wilde wrote or co-wrote most of the songs The albums lead single Schoolgirl flopped in Europe and Australia but Wildes fortunes improved in spectacular fashion with the albums second single a Hi-NRG remake of The Supremes classic You Keep Me Hangin On After topping the charts in Australia and Canada and peaking at number two in the UK it became a US number one single in 1987 With that hit she became the fifth UK female solo artist ever to top the US Hot 100 following Petula Clark Lulu Sheena Easton and Bonnie Tyler Wilde later admitted to not knowing the song terribly well beforehand Basically we just went into the studio with a lot of energy and not a lot of reverence We changed quite a lot of the song and I think thats why it was so successful It was a very spontaneous idea Her popularity especially in her native UK was revitalised and she scored further Top 10 hits in 1987 with Another Step Closer to You recorded with Junior and Rockin Around the Christmas Tree a Comic Relief charity single recorded with comedian Mel Smith In 1988 Wilde released her biggest selling album to date Close which returned her to the UK top 10 and spent almost eight months on the UK album chart It produced four major European hits Hey Mr Heartache You Came Never Trust a Stranger and Four Letter Word the last 3 were Top 10 hits in the UK The release of the album coincided with a tour of Europe where she was the opening act for Michael Jacksons Bad World Tour Wilde released her next album Love Moves in 1990 The album barely made the UK Top 40 and although it was a Top 10 success in Scandinavian countries it failed to sell as well as its predecessor and only spawned two minor hits Its Here a Top 20 success in Middle and Northern Europe as well as Cant Get Enough Of Your Love her last Top 20 hit in France She toured Europe again this time opening for fellow Briton David Bowie A collaboration with Rick Nowels who had produced hits for Stevie Nicks and Belinda Carlisle resulted in the guitar-driven pop of the single Love Is Holy and the album Love Is 1992 The albums success was again limited to a small number of countries though the single became another Top 20 hit in the UK and the second single Heart Over Mind also made the top 40 In 1993 she released her first official compilation album The Singles Collection 1981 1993 which was a success throughout Europe and Australia and the dancefloor-influenced single If I Cant Have You a cover of the Yvonne Elliman song from the film Saturday Night Fever that was penned by The Bee Gees became her last UK Top 20 Hit as well as a number 3 hit in Australia Wilde embarked on a huge Greatest Hits concert tour through Europe in 1994 and also toured Australia and Japan for the first time in six years citation needed Her next album Now Forever 1995 was a commercial failure worldwide Her single Breakin Away however was a minor hit and the follow-up This I Swear was also a minor hit in Europe She released a single Shame in 1996 15 From February 1996 to February 1997 Wilde appeared in Londons West End production of the musical Tommy After this Wilde started recording a new album However there were problems with her record company MCA Records had by that time become part of Universal Music and legal problems concerning the songs Subsequently Wilde abandoned the album which remains unreleased On 13 January 2001 Wilde performed live for the first time in years as a guest star in a charity show by the ABBA tribute band Fabba Since November 2001 she has toured the UK three times became her biggest solo hit in Germany since 1988 The album Never Say Never included eight new tracks plus five re-worked previous hits and has charted in Belgium France Switzerland Austria and Germany The second single from the album which was voted for by fans on her official website was Perfect Girl released in November 2006 and spent nine weeks on the German Top 100 singles chart A third single Together We Belong was released in March 2007 and a fourth single Baby Obey Me was released in Germany as a remix featuring German rapper Ill Inspecta In 2001 Wilde appeared on the first Here 04 The Grey Kingdom I

04 The Grey Kingdom I

04 The Grey Kingdom I Recorded over Peaceland by Nujabes in 2011 Written in 08 Engineered mixed by One Love The Grey Kingdom I Puffing his devils grass suggestive laws have placed that quote on He puckers Os of smoke against the air in kissing so longs Somehow satisfied though his saddened eyes are magnified This painful stimulation penetrates his deeply fathomed sigh A bellowed cough escapes him reminding him of his weakened state A sacrifice sleepily made above the streets police brigade Perched atop his lonely roof he peers below to see its maze and spits upon the sight of it in spite of this he keeps his gaze A gothic labyrinth of rats and pimps malicious deviants and maddened men who speak alone and pace amidst its evil the peacefulness of his secret homes numbingly interrupted by the sound of music humming from his phone a friend whose trusted Aziz Hey Im in the lab just finished this concoction that we spoke about if youre in town I reccomend you stop in Of course Then it clicked he reminsced of when as kids they fantasized about the future but bluer is where its ended Whispered murmurs beckon from beneath sneeringly in a huge frown Teasing him of their whereabouts he wishes he could swoop down but knows that he must take the stairs skipping steps in couples til his breath is doubled once in front his stoop he needs to catch his mumbled exhalations halt his chest from racing while he curls out putting up his music loud enough to block his worlds sounds Now selectively perceiving notices a purple dusk and clouds of pearly dust in whirling fluffs dispersed amongst a hazy thought thinking first to what his pal of late had finished with the experiment of which he volunteered as guinea pig This brilliant scientist who teaches at the university believes his work can free the minds of those who feel that personlly their fear defers their need to physically exceed their limits with a loss of inhibition and an awesome gift of fitness Biochemistry is well beyond his grasp but grips the basics though concerned with minor side affects a catch he might be faced with Something aches him a hunger for release from this infinity of sick extremities in men he sees the end he seeks Wishing to scale an edifice and soar below to render this true darkness from the light of life but fears preventing it His friend is blissfully ignorant of this morbid contemplation Hidden from the truth like clouds covering constellations On the same tip Aziz hasnt told him what this drugll do to one uncomfortable with inner demons eating up and through As far as he knows everythings fine with our protagonist unaware to all inherent torture pain and agony So naturally like everything in life hell take his chances quick Hell look the devil in the eye with pride and slyly dance with him Taking the train cause hed rather see the blackness than the view of men whore ill and blue with filthy shoes who kill for food where children brood Silly rules compulsively obsessed over Next stop hell have to go up from this blackened masking tour of the city Breathing its air again seeing its careful blend of pushing people good and evil whore speeding through weary winds Perceiving him arrogant a priest excretes a glare at him and very grimly walks away with his boy must be taking care of him Some pigeons leap like serraphim fleeing from under him others gluttonous stubbornness leave them bustling for crumbs of bread Hungry but fed ignoring growls and scowls from human flock at the welcome mat of destiny lowers his music box Intercom buzzer Who Its me Intercom buzzes and thus he steps through Inside the vestibule his flesh consumed by almost breathless swoon Before him white walls and tiles lace the corridor His horrors more repressed somewhat bereft but moving forwarder Towards a door in back an inch ajar perhaps an inch too far and nudges it seeing his goggled friend with tongs pinching jars Bubbling substances in aisled viles cross a granite counter past some random flowers and a tower of outlandish powders The man of the our Breathes Aziz below his lifting lenses The tone of this gifted chemist suggested his fresh agenda Next to them a couple stools though swive chairs breed comfort better s retinaes peripheral compares some cream colored leather Half-reclined with cushioned armrests and glass with alley view Fantasizingly stepping forth Aziz retorts Yeah thats for you Hey listen we should touch quick base on this serums theory Barely hearing clearly he nods shaken by dreary feelings As you know its like adrenaline and works like steroids of sorts Devoid of thought he blankly stares with lying eyes the boy is lost If youre at all unstable mentally this can be dangerous His brain a mess breaking from distractive dreams he feigns a yes alright bud Im gonna have to strap you in this seat securely He retreating thorly bleeds a curdling drop asleep too early Slight cringe when the syringe goes in within some dreamy show The gleaming glow of his only love seeming serene as snow Shelly so elegantly swelling in his flustered heart dancing to her own song alone inside her lush apartment Sensing mood music through her faces warm expression Joy in happiness he imagines the greatest composition Laughing with her from a distance but still somehow connected Retrospecter of a better time forever mine but never Mind shifting to her shadowed corner Wait no whats that upon her Nastily disfigured horrendous creatures attack her arms de- -tached from sockets gasps he watches and cries the lowest mutter Witnessing her slowly smothered then the monsters close the shutters No you mother- Gut wrenching burst of pain revokes his slumber There stands his friend another with that same glowing color Throws his brother crashing into shelves crushing computers Rushing uber fast he smashes through the window something super Jumping middle sky he notices a quiet hooded cloak with eyes watching from above he latches on a fire escape and climbs Skipping flight with simple pull and thrust motions he now plateaus scans his glum horizon one surprise is whered that one guy go focus Shell Ill be there soon Proceeds in full sprint Tippy toeing over reddish shingles breeze just pulls him Please be ok Feeling her warmness close lured by her souls blazing lull of comfort though not dwindling still nothing of her Slow re-kindling a touch of summer faintly glimmering now quaintly shimmering illuminous no pain she sings again Her truest love sighed relied unwinding lets his mind release Spies the feet of greyish beings dismayish feelings his eyes retreat to his hands of that same complexion Nay it couldnt be Im plagued with the worst disease I hope I didnt hurt Aziz Of her he sees the light when of himself but slightly brightening Heightening to the buildings ledge its edge no longer frightening Inside of him a hidden strength brews now at a harsh boil Gargoyle at his side pushing off it down some yards he coils Spins and swings to see the cinder fangs of that grinning thing Whirring past to boast its wingspan it turns and winks at him Snags it by the tail I will prevail He flings it effortlessly gainst the wall exploding chunks of brick rain like hail and fall With ground a half a dozen meters close he grabs a lightpost and one eighty catapults himself the city nights ghost Im saved Im not afraid

to it that they should not be set free until Daedalus invents an antigravity device Icarus is deeply upset 13 Rough Sketch Lyrics by Yury Galetsky Please draw my sketch for me my little boy Deceptive masks of this November day No one will get us right and bring us joy Nothing will make us change our way Sail little ship sail down the wind and fly Fly on my leaf my breath dont lag behind Though in the arms of love I am to die Its melody is all I bear in mind Go round like life and drop a line in flight And let the frozen words fly on and on Ive laughed enough and by the fire side Ill know when rustling leaves will turn me on Daedalus has made some queer dolls for the royalty while Icarus has been pondering over the sense of life 14 Ashes Lyrics by Gavriil Derzhavin in memory of Duke Meshersky Death nothing but tremor and dread And pride and need make up our essence We live with God and then were dead Where will you be tomorrow man The clock has struck your latest hours And like your dream your life is gone At the request of Tsarina Pacifai Daedalus has designed a machine for copulation with the White Bull that is how the Minotaur came into existence monster who was half man and half bull to whom young Athenian men and women were sacrificed in the Cretan labyrinth until Theseus killed him Icarus is tormented by thoughts about death 15 The Only Way Lyrics by Gleb Gorbovsky My eyes in the azure of heaven Im bathing The scraps of my love off my bosom Im scraping The songs I can hear are breaking my heart But now I am certain which way to depart But still I am fond of the road and the river The shadow of olive-tree gives me a shiver The songs I can hear are breaking my heart But now I am certain which way to depart By all sorts of thoughts at night I am worried My heart get along with the world which is varied The songs I can hear are breaking my heart But now I am certain which way to depart Wishing to hide the Minotaur Minosif told Daedalus to build a Labyrinth Palace Icarus is deeply upset 16 Ash Wednesday Lyrics by T S Eliot Because I do not hope to turn again Because I do not hope to know again Because I know that time is always time And place is always one and only place Because I do not hope to turn again Because I do not hope Because I do not hope to turn 17 Icaruss Prayer Im a sinner through and through Dirt and darkness is my world Lies and lechery reign too All is like a prison ward Madonna Litta Santa Maria Pray and ask from above Blissful and blessed is your holy prayer Heavenly prayer for love Up in heaven all is light Up in heaven therere no sins Theres no evil theres no night How I wish that I had wings Feeling that he is about to die Icarus makes up his will 18 Icaruss Will Lyrics by Yury Galetsky My friend I will not die My soul will still be playing And sounding as before I will transform and be transformed as ever A picture drawn on sand a little ship his vessel The child is running towards wonder To touch it tenderly and softly And name it in his childish way and smile contented My life is like a little rhyme With secret of the candle light and The light of quite a different life Of loves unknown distant echo Scene 7 One day Minosif told Daedalus to set the poems he had written in his youth to music Daedalus and Icarus sing the tune 19 Light in the Dark Lyrics by Josef Jugashvili Stalin Light in the dark spread out You are like heavenly conscience Light will disperse all the clouds Gods will has powerful forces Covered with darkness the meadow Waits for your smile on the hour Will you come down from heaven Gods will has almighty power Theres nothing really like it Light that inspires in darkness May you my dear be lightened May you shine on and be lustrous Opening my heart and lightened Nailed to the cross and spread over I will be filled with light and Wake with wings to hover Filled with light Minosif leaves crying bitterly Peccare licet nemini Waking with wings to hover Daedalus repeats The Wings Publius Ovidius Naso Metamorphoses Book The Eighth Translated from the Latin by John Dryden Then to new arts his cunning thought applies And to improve the work of Nature tries A row of quills in gradual order placed Rise by degrees in length from first to last As on a cliff the ascending thicket grows Or different reeds the rural pipe compose Along the middle runs a twine of flax The bottom stems are joint by pliant wax Thus well compact a hollow bending brings The fine composure into real wings His boy young Icarus that near him stood Unthinking of his fate with smiles pursued The floating feathers which the moving air Bore loosely from the ground and wasted here and there Or with the wax impertinently played And with his childish tricks the great design delayed The final master-stroke at last imposed And now the neat machine completely closed Then teaching with a fond concern his son He took the untried wings and fixed them on But fixd with trembling hands and as he speaks The tears roul gently down his aged cheeks Then kissed and in his arms embraced him fast But knew not this embrace must be the last PART 3 Scene 8 Daedalus and Icarus in Flight 20 Duet of Daedalus and Icarus Lyrics by Valery Bryusov Daedalus Take care my son You cant be sure Dont strain your wings with all your might The windy way is not secure Try to avoid the fogs in flight Icarus Youve freed my heart oh father dear You have undone my bodys ties Why are we slow Fly up Were near The everlasting world of stars Daedalus Weve run away from prison horrors But our port is far you know Weve got the ruffled foam below us Above us curling clouds flow Icarus Do we need clouds and seas Oh Nonsense The will of birds is our lot Take off and fly in vast expanses Across the endless starlit vault Daedalus Now follow me my sonny dear Believe my keen and sober mind I am the one as it appears Who knows the way to stars that shine Icarus The ways Whoever needs them dear Youd better sate your mirth for once Gods let us reach the upper sphere We will not have another chance Daedalus My son I fastened to your shoulders The nimble feathers didnt I Once twice three times across all borders To outer space now we can fly Icarus I cant restrain myself I drown Im deaf and dumb cant hear and see My flesh is up my soul is down The sun is Erebus to me Daedalus Now take the happy mean my dear Between the Earth and Heaven One Its in the golden abyss sphere Beyond the flock of cranes my son Valery Bryusov Young man To spite the earthly living You dared fly up to the sun You had your wings burnt up and melted You saw the sea of blue and fainted And tumbled down reckless man 21 The Lamentations of an Icarus Lyrics by Charles Baudelaire The friends of fallen girls I swear About happy life can boast While all I have is just a ghost And wring my hands in deep despair I vainly hoped to find the end and The centre of the universe In broken wing to my distress Alas my happy journey ended The graceful space was past compare With dazzling light of twinkling stars The light of sun is all my eyes Can memorize now as it were I burnt my wings for love of beauty And wouldnt like to give my name To yawning abyss which became My burial place and final duty Oh voto tremendo Spettacolo orrendo Gi regna la morte Dabisso le porte Spalanca crudel 22 The Flight of the Soul Lyrics by Tatyana Andronova Ones soul is meant for flying up above Over the trees and houses stretching orderly For cherishing the simple words of love And saying prayers softly and inaudibly For looking mildly into peoples eyes And saying that hostility is useless That there is light so clear and so lucid And life is fine when light surrounds us Life gives us wings that lift us up to heaven Enabling us to fly over routine and hover praying The soul of Icarus meets Archangel Gabriel surrounded by angels The angels sing an acathistus to Saint Gabriel 23 The Akathist Hymn to Archangel Gabriel Angels Archangel Gabriel The chosen Archangel always at the head of the throne of God The guardian of God and herald of joy the honourable Gabriel The glorifier of the Immaculate Virgin We offer up songs of praise devoutly Calling up to him with gratitude Rejoice proclaim His power with your name Rejoice show the indescribable glory of God with your marvellous beauty Rejoice the immaterial soul free from the bonds of the body Rejoice indescribable secret treasure Archangel Gabriel Seeing you a radiant star beautified equitable and wise in heaven Created before the coming of heaven and earth the Archangel We call with you to the Creator Hallelujah Dominical glories to the contemplator Rejoice divine fire who warms us heartily Rejoice reflecting this heat of passions beautified with amazing humility Rejoice wandering in darkness the inspiration of sudden Revelation Rejoice radiant and starlit dispersing the darkness Archangel Gabriel Fyodor Tutchev Its not the flesh its spirit that is mortified The soul is in despair fear and tremble It strives for light from darkness of the night And once enlightened it will grunt and rebel Dried up and burnt by doubt lack of faith It bears the unbearable for sure And realising its inevitable death It longs for faith but it will not adjure Through the soul of Icarus Archangel Gabriel sends all those living a revelation 24 The Time Will Come Lyrics by Yury Galetsky Gabriel The time will come and you will see The abyss opening up before your eyes The good old clock will stop The peal will fade away God will remain along with pain and youll be feeling two-foot small The time will come with fire in your blood The juice will gush like water from the tree And you will think the torment of your love To be tranquil and motionless and free The dancing soul is oh so bright and shiny Like word of triumph first and last Like childrens eyes delighted and amazed Like love oh so affectionate and young The time will come Among the dancing angels humble man Will see yourself submitting to mysterious wonders as one of many lines of God Almighty The Epilogue 25 Philippe Desportes He ran the risk of plunging by intent Into the abyss winning fame and glory It is a sad and venerable story He showed his worth and triumphed in the end Jacopo Sannadzaro Regretful is the end but it repays The downfall has lead to joy and of happiness Blessed is the one who perished in the darkness He will be glorified in songs of praise In saecula saeculorum 26 The Eternity The Final Chorus Lyrics by Tatyana Andronova Should you happen to be far away from your home all alone At the start of the seas or perchance in some vast distant plains You will yearn for perpetual living so sad and forlorn And your soul will ascend up to heaven allaying its pains We are living under the sun In the currents of wind everlasting Through the circle of ages we run Always waiting for beams of lighting Looking into the space through the haze of the last border line As we picture the same broken line of the worlds once again We should fill our souls for a second at least with sun light Praising love one more time lest this humdrum of life be in vain In this great everlasting world Well remember the endless evil and good 27 Psalm 1 Blessed is the one who doesnt follow the council of the wicked ones Who doesnt tread the path of scoffers And keeps away from spiteful scamps The law of God is what he follows And meditating day and night In Gods prescript his will he honours And does what he believes is right Hes like a tree by streams of water Its fruit in due course it will yield Its wholesome leaves will never wither And all he does he will succeed The wicked are incongruous creatures Like ashes theyll be blown away The sinful men amid the righteous Will not be saved on Judgment Day God knows the way of righteous people The way of scamps will fade away So we are standing on the crossroads Awaiting Judgement Day 28 Sublimity Lyrics by Svetlana Kim Sublimity does not need words and seems To live in perfect graceful silence It generates reality from dreams Concealing godlike images inside us Likewise the beam of light will never fade In splinters of a mirror strewn about It will evolve a diamond parade On leaves of dewy grass at morning round We cannot see sublimity at all Nor can we measure it no weigh nor taste nor touch it We only can accept it heart and soul Its immaterial and we can only trust it Its only music God amidst almighty gods That can in chime with Universe resound To save us and deliver our souls From earthly fetters like from prison bound Sublimity does not need useless words The End

They grow quite a lot of corn That is why I learned to like corn When I reached school age they signed me up and I went until 9th grade I stopped because school fees were too expensive and I left for Bamako to help support my family But I returned during planting season After harvest I left for Kayes My first adventure away from home was in a 2005 I was confronted with all sorts of problems while I was away I figured theres a good side and a bad side to every experience and I managed to earn enough to cover my basic needs This year on returning to the village to plant I heard about the Daba plot of land The motherharvests a daughters field and sells the produce at the local market Profits cover your various petty expenses Thats how I lived until I got married to a young fellow here in the village of Dien At first I planned to practice gardening here but I gave that up because there is a lack of available ground water To keep busy I began to grow a small plot of peanuts on land my father-in-law gave me Ive been growing peanuts in that field for the past 13 years It provides me with money to cover basic needs for me and my children Balafon music Vieux You are listening to the adored I signed up for this competition so I could practice market gardening in honour of my mother Im going to plant cucumbers tomatoes and eggplant during the rainy season and then I will plant potatoes Gardening provides many advantages it feeds us brings in money Thats why I didnt hesitate to propose gardening for my project I have a message for young people idleness never feeds anyone its quite a distance and the road is bad roosters crowing sound of the motorcycle revving Vieux Sali hold on were leaving for Tingole Ambient sound Cattle mooing in their pen a man calling his cows addressing them as if they were human followed by the sound of milking Vieux Today were with the candidates in Tingole Badalabougou 25 km west of Fana Well start with Fanto Samake candidate number 4 who describes his project to us Fanto Samake Im Fanto Samake my father is Abdoulaye Samake and my mother is Sitan Doumbia My parents are farmers so I practice agriculture like they do Since my parents also kept cows my job was to take them to pasture Every morning I left for the fields with my younger brother and in the evening I would drive the team of oxen to plough the fields I slowly developed a love of cattle and three years ago my mother gave me a cow I have three cows now Sound of goats bleating Vieux Sali I can see you are watching your step more than you do when walking in Bamako eh Here we are close to the reality of Mali What a wonderful life agriculture raising animals Salimata Were on our way to meet Kafoune our candidate number 5 Kafoune has a touching story to tell Kafoune Mariko Im Kafoune Mariko my father is Fako Mariko and my mother is Sitan Diarra My project is to raise goats I like itbecause I was born to a family of farmers and herders I learned this work from a young age When I was very small whenever my parents were in the fields I was in charge of the sheep and goats in the pasture My father never had a son so I and my little sister were charged to drive the oxen and plough to cultivate the fields When I got older I left to work as a maid in Bamako At times I got into arguments with the womanfor whom I worked for various reasons I left home to earn money to help my mother who had no sons but I realized that my future was here after my father brought me back to give me in marriage here in Tingole Banangabougou I had my first child 2 years ago Since my husband is also quite poor I didnt have the chance to be given animals as happens in other families that raise cows and goats I thought this competition would give me the opportunity to raise goats which are easy to handle produce milk and can be sold rapidly when you need money But I dont have a single goat I explained the situation to Alimata Diarra and she has helped my by offering me goats And since then Ive been keeping busy taking care of my small herd as well as with my household chores After I bring the meal to the men in the fields I feed my millet chaff to the goats whom I really adore Balafon music Sound of baby chicks hens and roosters inbackground Salimata Kone Here we are at Diakaridia Fombaspoultry farm Ive actually survived the trip I thought w ould be dangerous I where I stayed for 3 years Vieux Tell us about the 3 years you spent in Koutialia Diakaridia Fomba It was quite an adventure You know when youre young and you find yourself in a place where you know nobody adaptation is difficult My history with poultry began when my dad gave me my first chicken but I bought the others myself Ive raised chicken for 10 years I realized it has lots of advantages and I enjoy i also Its profitable on many levels I aim to win the Daba Kamalen competition With a modern chicken coop I can increase production and Ill be able to make good money selling poultry Balafon music Vieux Weve now met all 6 candidates in the Daba Kamalen contest and were aware of their projects Every second week we will present an exciting episode about the lives of these young would be able to participate in collective work in the field We women support her and I believe that thanks to our support the problem has been resolved Salimata Traore I think my father-in-law was Fomba I think the spot is fine for a chicken coop I suggest to build it from east to west This will protect the chickens from rain The entrance should face north lengthwise Ive suggested a building 4 meters by 2 meters In that space you can raise up to 100 birds Diakaridia Fomba Im wondering about the height of the buildings foundation And if we put windows on the south wall that will help air circulate inside the coop I dont know if the project is going to help pay for the tin roofing and chicken wire to cover the windows Also will it provide me with improved species of poultry and chicken feed My contribution is to cover cost of construction of the coop up to the top of the walls Balafon music Goats bleating cows mooing ambient sound mixed with voices of women and children etc FarmQuest: reality radio in Mali - Episode 4

FarmQuest: reality radio in Mali - Episode 4 FarmQuest or Daba Kamalen in Bambara is an innovative reality radio program in Fana Mali designed to encourage youth to consider farming as a profitable business and not just a means of subsistence It follows six young candidates competing to be named Malis best new farmer FarmQuest was graciously supported by the Rockefeller Foundations Innovation Challenges fund in 2012 Learn more about FarmQuestion at farmradio-org - The following is an English transcript of this episode We apologize for any spelling or other errors This is a quick translation from Bambara to French to English aimed at giving English audiences an idea of the content of the FarmQuest reality radio project We hope you enjoy it A special thanks to the team at Radio Fanaka in Fana Mali for sharing the final recordings with us - Transcription Episode 4 Introduction Balafon theme music continues under intro by hosts Vieux Fatogoma The program Daba Kamalen is already proving successful in encouraging the candidates and other young people from Banico region to start small farm businesses Salimata Kone We will sum up previous episodes for our listeners who did nottune in The first episode I am a candidate illustrated the possibility for young people to start small farm business It explained the contest to take place between 6 candidates in the Banico region andidentified the 4 participating villages Ideas were exchanged about the importance of agriculture Each candidate told of their past difficulties and their search for solutions in the field of agriculture Some young people had previously left the farm and others had stopped school in to get married Those who left eventually returned to the farm Vieux Fatogoma Episode Two was entitled My dream becomes reality Here each candidate was aleady well on the road to making their dream become reality Candidate 1 Mamadou Diarra would plant an improved variety of corn in order to produce seed Candidate 2 Awa Doumbia would plant an improved strain of peanuts to produce seed for the market Candidate 3 Salimata Traore from Wakoro began by planting a market garden of cucumbers tomatoes and eggplantCandidates Fanto Samake and Kafoune Mariko are raising livestock cattle and goats respectively and would learn to improve the feed All were on their way to succeeding in their projects Salimata Kone In Episode 3 You need good seed to insure proper germination we had some informative lessons from the experts 2 35Song for Mamadou Diarra by Yayi Diarra Vieux Fatogoma VO ovoer song Today 24 October 24 2013 wasone of celebration in Mamadou Diarras field Salimata Kone Vieux today we participated Mamadou Diarras corn harvest We are in the company of theagriculture agent Abdou Marikoand agronomist Moumine Traore both from the government department of agriculture Song for Mamadou DIarra continues Vieux Fatogoma tells Salimata Koneto hop on the motorcycle and off they go to Ballan to see Mamdou Diarras corn harvest En route they chantsome important people who will be present at the corn harvest ambient sound Vieux sounds the horn and greets people on his way 3 54 3 55 Abdou Mariko Im Abdou Mariko I work at the agriculture office Fana All our hard work has not been in vain The harvest is a success despite the slow start due to the lack of rain at the time the field was planted In the future we will prepare better for this eventuality The corn yield is good This improved strain of corm is different than that destined for consumption Here is my advice for Mamadou and friends Specific conditions must be respected to obtain good results with this variety for seed Firstly you have to follow strict procedures for planting and that is what was done here A distance of 300 meters must be maintained between this field and the neighbouring fields The field must be ploughed at the right moment All this was respected to the letter 5 45 Vieux Fatogoma Kefa Diarra is a municipal counsellor and farmer He talks about the introduction of this improved variety of corn in Fana The municipal office supports this practice 6 08 Kefa Diarra I am very pleased on many levels and I advise planting this strain since the results are excellent I myself am a corn farmer and I know it is not easy to find a good improved variety to plant and this project has helped us greatly in the respect We can all be overjoyed and profit from the experience of seed production It will increase our ability to grow our own food and be self sufficient and it will halt the exodus of young people who are leaving the farms in droves for the city to find work This is what I have to say Mamadou Diarra is indeed an exampleto follow Being so rigorous on the job is also quite an accomplishment for this young man 7 25 Salimata Kone Mamoutou Diarra is Mamadous local advisor He is very impressed by the work the candidate has done in his cornfield 7 34 Mamoutou Diarra When youve been given just bones to eat in the past and someone comes along and give you meat - this proverb describes the partnership we have enjoyed with the radio We need constant help and encouragement so that our young people are able to work and remain at home on the farm If they leave our villages and land will be empty and have no future as parents grow older day by day Ultimately there would be no young generations left to carry on in their place 8 04 Salimata Kone Mamadou Konate the Daba Kamalen local commission presidentgives his appreciation of Mamadou Diarra 8 13Mamadou Konate This has been a great lesson earned for the farmers and all those present here today We see with our own eyes what this hectare planted by my namesake Mamadou has produced All of you present in this field today can now follow in the footsteps traced for you by Mamadou All you young people cans see that what we have been hearing on the radio is true validand really possible This message is not destined for Mamadou alone nor just for the villages of Miniboug or Balan but for the entire country that it can become self sufficient in food production 8 56Song for Mamadou Diarra Yayi Diarra sings the praises of the valiant young Daba kamalen candidates 9 10 Vieux Fatogoma Mamadou Diarra what message do you have for other young people 9 14 Mamadou Diarra I ask that other such projects as this be encouraged since there are many young people here who would like to have the same opportunity as I had 9 29 Fade in song for Diakaridia Fomba mixed with ambient sound of roosters crowing and chickens clucking 9 45 Salimata Kone After leaving the cornfield of Mamadou Diarra in Ballan the radio Fanaka team heads for Dien to discover the variety of poultry named wassacheand the new chicken coop of candidate 6 Diakaridia Fomba Over sound of chickens 10 00 DiakaridiaFomba We went to Bamakoto purchase this new variety of Wassache rooster There are certain problems raising this breed in comparison with those we have raised traditionally Particularly concerning the feed and also access to free range During the day we let them have free run of the yard they can go where they please However the feed and water are given in the evening when the sun goes down The feed costs money we mix corn flour dried fish and caco powder I grind the flour add termite larva fish and millet bran If you like this type of farming you must work hard and push yourself beyond your limits as I do So far during the project Ive managed to raise two batches of chicks 15 at first and and then 10 more which makes 25 in all Some of these young hens have already laid eggs some are now in the processhatching When I bought these new improved breed roosters I also bought powdered feed medication and vitamines The vet advised me to administer two vaccinations doses to each chick and two days later to dilute one teaspoon of medication in 5 liters water to be given morning and night translators note this technical info was poorly translated into French so I am not sure if details are exact I followed the rules exactly As you see all birds are healthy and I I give them two pills every week This medication has visibly improved our hens health Vaccination helps to eliminate white fluid from the intestine When you medicate your poultry properly you avoid spreading disease among the young chicks However it is not easy to raise wassache chickens Our chickens with thin legs produce more eggs than the wassa variety I am not sure this is accurate translation Wassa roosters have difficulty mating with our traditional hens because they are too heavy since a wassa rooster weighs 4 kilos and can main or even kill our thin-legged hens But when you manage to raise chicks to maturity they produce more eggs since wassa-bred hens can lay as many as 40 eggs Another problem is that the roosters tend to break the eggs and drink the contents I didnt realise what was happening at first if I had I would already have over 40 new chicks So now as you can see I have divided the chicken coop into two sections and have separated the adults from the chicks Look at the new chicks 1 13 44 Song for Diakaridia by Abdou Bakayoko Vieux Fatogoma I understand that this hybrid breed is a veritable reproduction Diakaridia Fomba IVe had over 100 eggs so far I have separated them amonghens as you can see here The old man from whom I bought these was roosters gave us all the information we need regarding feed maintenance and a keeping a healthy chicken coop 14 30 Song for Salimata Traore over which we hear a mans voice speaking about Daba Kamalen sound mix rather confused here since we dont know who it is or what he is saying 14 47 Salimata Kone Now we are on our way to Wakoroto see the market garden of Salimata Traore We are with our agronomy experts Abdou Mariko and Moumine Traore The candidate wants to prove she is a courageous woman from Banico regon 14 58 Vieux Fatogoma Salimata Traoreis the first farmer to try planting potatoes in time in her zone 15 10 Moumine Traore Were here to assist Salimata with her potato crop Potatoes arent grown in the same way as millet the standard crop there are specific measure to be taken to prepare the field such as making rows15 cm wide by 10 meters long This measurement must be strictly respected for spacing between each 30cm potato plant The entire field measur 600 2 sq meters 16 09 Vieux Fatogoma Mme Coulibaly Salimataa married surname is what Moumine explained is clear to you Salimata Traore Yes I understand Vieux Fatogoma Do you have any questions for our experts Salimata Traore I want Moumineto explain how to make the rows Minata my advisor and I are used to making rows in our gardens but not for potatoes 16 32 Moumine Traore Its basically the same method as usual but rows made during the rainy season are not the same as those made in the dry season During the rainy season the earth is built up to create a barrier to channelor drain the water like a trough In the dry season we want to retain humidity around the plants People dont usually sow potatoes during the rainy seasons because too much water is not good for the plants As the weather still looks like rain this gives us time toplough the earth prepare the rows and wait for the right period to plant the potatoes 17 41 Salimata Traore Id also like Moumine to explain how to prepare organic manure compost Moumine Traore When we come to make the rows we will measure the number of wheelbarrows of compost required per row Salimata Traore Im Salimata Traore a vegetable gardener from Wakoro I plant tomatoes and cucumbers We use pesticides but our gardens still is affected by insects Some days we are able to sel what we produces and people even come here to buy at other times we eat what we grow The cucumbers I grew this year brought in about6000 CFA which allowed me to pay for new clothes for my children for the feast of Ramadan 18 32 Vieux Fatogoma Aside from cucumbers did no other vegetable cropyou planted succeed in producing vegetables to eat Salimata Since we were preparing the field in order to plantpotatoes we planted our tomatoes outside this particular garden Vieux Fatogoma Are you nervous about the idea to plant potatoes Salimata Traore Not at all Im reallylooking forward to it Vieux Fatogoma Are the experts advice and instructions clear to you now Salimata Traore Yes perfectly clear Song for Salimata Traore by Batoma Fomba 19 19 fade in Song for Fanto Samake by Nene Diarra nb music should be played for logner before VO of D Salimata comes in The songcontinues under the whole sequence isntad it should have been brought up from time to time to let the sequence breathe but not used continually under as we cant hear the wors properly and it distracts from the interaction at times 19 19 Salimata Kone From Dien we travel by motorcycle on the road to Tingole located 25 km from Fana on the highway to Bamako We are going to meet candidate 4 Fanto Samakewho is going to sell his milk to the local dairy in TIngole Vieux Fatogoma Fanto Samakeand his advisor called un in Fana and we asked them to meet us at the dairy which is where they sell their milk on a regular basis We want to see for ourselves how they sell their milk The building is on the right side of the road as youre heading for Bamako on the outskirt of the town of Tingole The dairy is built in two sections and was the initiative of a group of the communes cattle farmers 20 21 Salimata Kone Here comesFanto bringing his milk by motorbike Sound of the motorcycle mixed with voices chatting outside back of the dairy 20 36 Vieux Fatogoma greets Fanto Samake Fanto Samake Hello there Vieux He gives his greetings to all the dairy workers Ambient sound of Fantos milk being poured into a container to be measured 21 05 Vieux Fatogoma What quantity of milk does this container hold Dairy worker It holds 5 litres Sound of milk being poured into potto be heated 21 24 Vieux Fatogoma HEY Sali were we are with Fanto at the dairy and they are tallying up the milk hes just delivered This is his second 5 litre can which makes for a total of litres Dairy worker That makes 10 litres Vieux Fatogoma Lassana that makes a total 15 litres Fanto how much did you bring today Fanto Samake I brought 15 litres Vieux Fatogoma You produced that quantity on your own Fanto No its for both me and my advisor Vieux Fatogoma And how many litres are for you Fanto Samake 4 litres are mine the remaining 11 liters are for my advisor Each day we bring that amount together 15 litres Vieux Fatogoma Before your milk cow only produced 2 litres but nowit seems youve increasedproduction to 4 22 09 Fanto Now the pasture is green so the animals are left to graze on their own as they please But for the dry season we store millet andcorn stalks to use as feed 22 25 Music for Awa Doumbia by Adama Micro nb there is no break between the sequence with Fanto and the intro on the jouranlists way to Dien Music for Awa Doumbia should havee been first introduced without voice over for a few seconds to separate the 2 sequences Vieux Fatogoma We are now headed for Dien to see Awa Doumbia and her peanut plantation Well also greet the family of Chief Fomba Ambient sound of Vieux greeting people in the peanut field 22 39 Salimata Kone Local commission president Mamadou Konate was not able to be with us because of the commemoration ceremony taking place at the time for his brother who was buried 40 days ago May he rest in peace Over ambient sound of people taking and activity in the field Vieux Fatogoma The village chief represented by Mamadou Fombawill officially open the harvest of Awas field Doumbia 23 00 Mamadou Fomba Welcome everyone I am Mamadou Fombafrom Dien and I speak as official representative ofour village chief KonibaFomba who has asked me to greet you all warmly We are here in Awa Doumbias peanut field We have been collaborating with Radio Fanaka on various projects for several years now and they asked us to submit a candidate for th is project Awa was chosen for her courage and her hard work We contributed the field where we are now standing All the young men who are here men and women are hoping for her success with her project I salute the promoters of this project and those people who have come from Canada As farming people there is always something we can learn Once again I thank you for everything before I leave you to do the harvest 24 38 Vieux Fatogoma Im here with our candidate who will share her thoughts with us today 24 42 Awa Doumbia I am so happy that I am speechless I thank God for having given us rain As you saw the last time you came the field was in a sorry state for lack of rain but today we are encouraged since things are better Id like to thank the chief the other villagers and the project organisers and I hope that God will give long life to this project 25 11 Maimouna Coulibaly Im Maimouna Coulibaly As Awas advisor I can assure you that she applied the rules of farming exactly as the experts suggested Each time that I visited her field I saw great progress I am so happy since she has proved true to her word 25 33 Vieux Fatogoma Salimata as usual we are accompanied by Moumine Traore and Abdou Mariko who have both come to Awa Doumbias peanut field to observe what shes accomplished and give her advice for her workin the future 25 51 Abdou Mariko We are really pleased at the result of Awas field which is a success God has come to the rescue as the land was very hard and dry but last night there was rainfall which has made the harvest easier This improved strain of peanuts is different than the ordinary type There are certain specific conditions the candidate must respect before the peanut seed is sent to the lab for analysis Moumine Traore My advice to the candidate about her field is not to mix the two varieties she has harvested We obtain two products from the peanut plant peanuts and foliage We know the use of the peanuts seeds and the leaves are distributed to farmers who raise goats sheep an cattle so nothing is lost 27 28 Clip of song for Kafoune Mariko by Ba ba Tangara 27 55 Vieux Fatogoma Today I am on my own going to Tingole Banakabougou as my fellow journalist Salimata Kone is not feeling well enough to travel with me However I am not alone as I am accompanied by the team from Radios Rurales Internationales composed of Lamine Togola Erica Madame Nango Pomerance and project intern Mark Ellison Ambient sound of goats bleating Vieux As you can hear by the sound of goats in the background we are now with Kafoune Mariko Some of her goats already have given birth to kids and others are expecting to soon 28 36 Kafoune once your own baby is born wont you find it difficult caring for so many young goats Kafoune Mariko As you know my pregnancy didnt prevent me from doing my household chores and taking care of my goats So once I have my baby it wont hinder me from managing my goats either Just as Ill I take care of my baby I will care for my goats 29 05 Vieux Fatogoma I understand that when you call your goats they come right away some are so tame they even follow you into your house 29 16Kafoune Mariko Its true they are so tame and attached to me because of all the careI givethem Even when I go outside at night they come around to see me And if a goat escapes her tether she never strays far from home she comes to sleep in front of my door And in the morning on awakening I find her there They dont tend to run away like other goats when their owner isnt around Vieux Fatogoma Can you tells us about of some of the problems youve encountered and also share the advice you have received from Alimata your project mother as to how to care for your goats 29 58 Kafoune Mariko From the very first day I got the goats I have had no problems either with feeding or with keeping my goats for healthy and clean Thank God Just ask Alimata I would like this project to continue to help us especially other young married women to raise animals in order to avoid having to go to Bamako to make money This will allow us to stay here and care for our husbands and families and so I wish long life for this project 30 52 message from Modibo Kodialan Traore Radio Fanakan host who gives the times for broadcast of the episode Program jingle in comes in comes in too quickly 35 04 Vieux Fatogoma The day of Mamadou Diarras corn harvest in Balan the agricultural agent from Fana Abdou Mariko advised Mamadou on various things such as how to conserve the seedafter harvest Abdou Mariko After the harvest you must wait until the corn is ripe For corn destined for consumption the harvest is different in this instance you have to wait until the cornfieldis dry including the leaves and stalks of the plants Even if they fall off it doesnt matter this is what is recommended for this improved strain Corn for eating purposes would be toot dry but the corn for seeds doesnt actually it germinates later on For this reason you have to wait til the whole crop is dry After that you take the leaves off by hand before putting the corn into the shelling machine that remove the corn from the cob You can put the seeds directly into bags right away when its for eating purposes but with corn produced for seed we remove all the seeds that are not perfect before taking it to the lab for testing First we bring it to our own lab and then to the test lab The corn once sorted has to be stored in proper bags in a dry place where it can breathe avoiding all contact with insect rats and mice and protected from any moisture since moisture will germinate the seed prematurely before the next planting season and ruin it for planting purposes for Fanto Samako by Nene Diarra comes in under Vieuxs voice Vieux In the same way that men need a place to sleep animals also need shelter Lets go to Tingole Banankabougou so see how Fanto Samakes cows are doing Fanto on our trip to Sougouni and Dougoubougou you learned how to improve animal feed so have you put this into practice Fanto Samake Yes definitely with the goats we got for the project we give them the feed that was recommended There are three wild plants that were recommended goni saba and toro but the best is toro So we havent used the others The animals really prefer toro Vieux Fatogoma How did you react when you realised your goats werepregnant Fanto Samake I am pleased and every day I expect thatone is going to give birth Just seeing them makes me happy Vieux that you earn can purchase an animal than can prove useful to you in the future You may go away for 5 years to seek your fortune and come home with nothing ahead of you for the future So dont leave your village Get your parents blessing to start I want all our young people here to join hands and work the land together Why leave the country to look for work when you can do something profitable
